Post subject:  Heartbeat / Pulse or Clicking?

My wand (well, Mom's now, as it was a gift on Christmas) does not seem to do anything except make regular click sounds while slowly rotating it, in either direction. As the detection of a certain number of pulses or heartbeats is step one to any of the instructions we are quite befuddled. Is it a bad wand, or are we idiots... It made for an embarrassment as it was my big gift to Mom for Christmas, but I'd not tried it out beforehand.
Help?!?? What if anything should I do or do differently?

It seems as if the wand has programmed before, perhaps in QC. Sorry about that. You can program it yourself e.g. for the volume control by entering learning mode, moving the wand into horizontal position, and then turning the wand slowly until it starts the pulses. When the rapid pulsing is happening use the appropriate volume button on your remote while pointing it to the tip of the wand.

Note about rotating: It starts to recognize the rotating gesture only after a half turn (to be sure that it is not another gesture and the wand was rotated accidentally).

You can also reset the wand. See here: http://www.kymera-wand.com/kymera-wand-manual/

Hello,

Sorry for the trouble you've been having - it actually sounds most likely that the wand is fine (and wasn't already programmed) but that you haven't quite got the hang of the gestures yet. In particular, it sounds like you're turning the wand further (and probably more quickly) than necessary for the rotation gestures. In case you haven't seen them already, we've put some short video clips of each gesture on our website to help show you how to perform the gestures - see http://www.thewandcompany.com/Manual.html and click on the typewriter-style buttons. Also, a few hints that might help:

- If you're having trouble, stop and hold the wand steady and horizontal for a couple of seconds before trying again.

- Waving the wand more vigorously doesn't tend to work well - short, positive movements are best.

- For the rotation gestures, you need to rotate the wand very slowly and smoothly one quarter-turn, keeping the tip steady. Once you've gone just over a quarter-turn, the wand will register the rotation and go into fine-resolution rotation mode, where it will register an event every 15 degrees - this allows you to control the volume with only small movements of your wrist. To get the one-pulse or two-pulse confirmations in practise mode, you only need to turn the wand a tiny bit after you've made the initial quarter-turn.

There are a few videos on YouTube that might be helpful to get you started:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aYSI1Vz954 = programming the wand
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7j5lvrR-Gw = using the wand

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aLkv6ESpmQ - a video made by one of our German resellers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5iBnV7I9NY - an example of controlling a TV and set-top box with the wand

Once you get the hang of it, you should find that the gestures are quite straightforward to perform, but it is like an instrument requiring dexterity, it takes a bit of practice to get used to it.

I hope that helps, but do let us know if you're still having any problems.

Cheers,

Richard

I have to second that about getting the gestures down.
At first I thought, "how hard can this be?" but there is indeed a little work in getting the knack of it.
A problem I occasionally encountered in the beginning was over-gesturing, moving too far; this resulted in the wand interpreting the motion as perhaps a tap, when actually I was doing a downward flick. Likewise, tapping too hard can confuse the wand too.
The trick, I found, is to make small, crisp movements using your wrist, not from your elbow. Your elbow should not move at all.
Once you get the hang out of it, it really works quite well - it'll be second nature in no time.
